ENGLISH SETTER BREEDING PROGRAM
Our number one goal is to produce the next English Setter to claim the coveted crown of immortality, the National Champion title at Ames Plantation.
After years of study and research, I have come to the conclusion that English Setter breeding practices need to be modified in order to produce Setters that will be able to compete with Pointers on the All-Age Circuit in the United States, particularly in the American South.
The bloodlines that once dominated the National Field Trial Championship from the late 1890’s till the 1930’s have come to consistently dominate the Grand National Grouse Champion titles from the 1940’s till today.
However, a standard conformation is lacking in the bloodlines. English Setter males may range in size, anywhere between 35-100 pounds, and females 30-70 pounds. This is not what I would call a “standard”-sized breed. Conformation is also lacking in a lot of field dogs. To win a competition, the dog must be built like a race horse - possessing a large deep chest, long muscular legs, long straight back, and a long nose – as well as having intelligence and natural hunting instincts.
Such competition-winning characteristics are carried on by Silver Castle Kennel dogs. From our Foundation Dogs, through to their winning, producing sons and daughters, the combination of domestic and imported bloodlines is already producing winners – Silver Castle’s Dot placed in only her second trial, showing great promise.
We at Silver Castle Kennels have used domestic and imported European bloodlines to breed an English Setter that will beat Pointers on the All-Age Circuit. Our dogs have excellent conformation, low health problems (hip dysplasia), amiable temperament, super intelligence, excellent noses, and are easy to train and handle.
